Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society. Mississippi State boasts an active chapter, the Xi Kappa Chapter. In keeping with the goals of the international organization, the local chapter recognizes academic achievement, works to promote literarcy in the community, and fosters an appreciation for literary studies. The local chapter actively recruits eligible members, meets regularly to foster a sense of community, recognizes its new members with an annual induction ceremony, and involves itself in a number of community projects such as library book sales.

Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society, founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University.

The organization offers this purpose statement:

"Sigma Tau Delta's central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature."

The Society's goals include

  • Confering distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies;
  • Providing cultural stimulation on college campuses and the surrounding communities;
  • Promoting interest in literature and the English language;
  • Serving society by fostering literacy.

The Society includes over 750 active chapters located in Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States. It has more than 1,000 faculty sponsors, and approximately 8,500 members are inducted annually.

The Xi Kappa Chapter of ΣΤΔ invites interested and eligible students to join this honorary.

Membership is open to:

  • active Mississippi State University undergraduate and graduate students
  • who have completed 12 hours of English classes beyond freshman composition
  • and have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Induction into the honorary requires a one-time $45.00 fee.

Persons interested in joining may contact any of the officers for further information or complete this membership application and forward it to Dr. Michael Kardos in the Department of English.

Each fall semester the honorary is pleased to invite its new members to an induction banquet.
